PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles will face a starting rookie quarterback in Saturday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. But it won’t be Shedeur Sanders.
Dillon Gabriel, the third-round rookie out of Oregon, is expected to start for Cleveland at Lincoln Financial Field, the franchise announced on Saturday morning.
The Browns have been dealing with a myriad of quarterback injuries, bringing a level of uncertainty over which signal-callers the Eagles would face in their second preseason game.
Joe Flacco, the presumed Week One starter, is not expected to play due to rest. Meanwhile, injuries will likely keep Sanders and Kenny Pickett off the field.
Sanders, the fifth-round rookie out of Colorado, suffered an oblique strain during warmups before Wednesday’s joint practice. Pickett, the former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick and the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX backup, is dealing with a nagging hamstring injury.
Gabriel was also working his way back from a hamstring issue. But the 2024 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year got enough work in practice to make him available for Saturday.
Gabriel and Tyler Huntley, who was signed earlier this month, are expected to be the only quarterbacks available for the Browns. It’ll be an interesting test for Kelee Ringo, Adoree’ Jackson, Drew Mukuba, Sydney Brown and the rest of Philadelphia’s secondary.
