Man United have been linked to signing PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.

One of perhaps the most shocking transfer stories of the summer is that Paris Saint-Germain have decided to replace goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma by signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille.

However, Donnarumma isn’t expected to come cheap. PSG are yet to name their price for the Italian international, but seeing as he is regarded as arguably the best pure shot-stopper in the world, they certainly won’t let him leave for pennies.

Man United should sign Mike Maignan instead

With all the links to Donnarumma, many Man United fans are excited at the prospect of having a world class keeper behind Amorim’s defence. However, Donnarumma may be one of the best stoppers, but he isn’t great with his feet. If you look back at last season, many of Onana’s mistakes were due to his distribution, so, surely United should consider a keeper that is better on the ball as their Onana replacement.

AC Milan stopper Mike Maignan has just one year left on his contract with the Italian club. He was linked with a move to Chelsea earlier in the transfer window, but the Blues decided against paying for him, and instead head into the season with Robert Sanchez in goal.

Maignan is still yet to sign a new deal at Milan, and it is fair to say that alongside Donnarumma, he is one of the best shot-stoppers in the world. But the difference with Maignan is that he is exceptional with his feet too. In fact, Maignan is one of the best distributing goalkeepers in the world.

United should consider signing him instead of Donnarumma, as he would be a better fit in trying to rectify the issues from last year. Furthermore, with just one year left on his contract, his market value is at a low of £22m, making him an absolute bargain.

What other keeper could Man United sign?

The other option for United is that they look for a younger keeper who can compete with Onana more next season. They have been linked with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, who at just 23, is more of a long-term Onana replacement.

The Belgian keeper is very happy at Antwerp, but is open to a move this summer, however, he has made it clear that he would only move if he was guaranteed the number one spot somewhere, as he views minutes as more important than simply joining a bigger club.

Furthermore, because of his age, Lammens is expected to cost more than Mike Maignan, making it surely a simple choice. Go out and get one of the best in the world both at shot stopping and on the ball; Get Maignan for a cheaper price and it would be a significant upgrade on Onana.
