The Seattle Seahawks showed off their offense during a preseason matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs at Lumen Field on August 15.
While the Chiefs rested the bulk of their starters, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and defensive tackle Chris Jones, the Seahawks kicked off the game with their new $100.5 million quarterback, Sam Darnold, at the helm.
Darnold played just one series, completing 4-of-4 passes for 34 yards while leading a 10-play, 81-yard march down the field that ended in a touchdown. Seahawks backup, Drew Lock, a Lee’s Summit-native, took over against his hometown team.
Lock, who returned to Seattle after spending the 2024 season with the New York Giants, looked incredibly sharp. He completed 10-of-12 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns, including a 30-yard run toward the end zone. The Seahawks defeated the Chiefs 33-16.
Instead of immediately celebrating with his teammates after the exhibition game, Lock appeared to have a singular focus, tracking down Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. Lock revealed the heartfelt reason he tracked down Reid after the matchup.
“I knew going into the game I was going to make a point of trying to get him before he gets off the field,” he told the Kansas City Star.
Andy Reid Coached Andy Lock, Drew Lock’s Dad, Who Died Suddenly In April
During Lock’s press conference on Friday night, the 28-year-old rocked a hat with “ANDY” emblazoned on the front, a tribute to his father, Andy Lock. Lock’s dad, a well-known restaurateur in Kansas City and co-owner of Summit Hospitality Group, died “unexpectedly” on April 3. He was 57.
Andy played football at Mizzou. During his first season in 1989, the offensive line was none other than Reid.
“We only had about a year’s relationship at Missouri, but it’s funny how… you carry that relationship over and years go by and by and by, but you still feel like he’s a great friend and mentor who would do anything in the world for you,” Andy Lock told the Star in a 2018 phone interview.
“I know for a fact that if I ever needed anything, or if he did, we’d be there for each other. That’s a neat thing and a powerful thing.”
Following Andy’s death, Reid joined a group of former Mizzou players for a tribute on the eve of the funeral, but couldn’t partake in the service. So, the 67-year-old head coach called Lock and left him a voicemail that the quarterback shared in part following the Chiefs-Seahawks game.
‘Your father was a great man. If you ever need anything…” Lock recalled. “It was a good message.”

“I just wanted to let him know I appreciated it. He didn’t have to do that,” Lock noted. “It was just cool to see him take his time out to do that.”
Lock, who’s expecting his second child with his wife, Natalie Lock, however, continues to grapple with the loss of his father. “You’re not as sad all the time. But then there’s those moments that come back and take you to that place… It just makes you appreciate what life is.”
Reid told reporters of Lock, “Obviously, with his dad and all the things that went on there, he was getting bombarded with things. But he wanted to make sure that — I sent him a little message — that he got it and he appreciated it. So, he’s a good kid.”
