Anthony Gordon warned Liverpool that they face a hostile reception at Newcastle next Monday night as fury mounts over their pursuit of Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker was nowhere to be seen as the Magpies kicked off their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park, where the home side were left with 10 men after Ezri Konsa was sent off for bringing down Gordon in the second half.

Furious Newcastle supporters could be heard chanting "there's only one greedy b******" following the match as their frustration over the saga involving their prized frontman became crystal clear.

The Magpies welcome Liverpool for their opening home fixture of the campaign next Monday, and after the Villa stalemate attention swiftly shifted to that clash as the club's fury over the Reds' pursuit of Isak persists.

Liverpool have seen one offer for the Swede rejected by Newcastle, and are anticipated to come back with an improved proposal after the 25-year-old made his position abundantly clear that he has no desire to represent the Magpies again.

When asked about the Liverpool encounter next Monday by TNT Sports, Gordon declared: "With everything that's gone on I'm sure the atmosphere is going to be a bit wild!".

"I'll be excited to see the home fans again, get back in the stadium. It's going to be a top game."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was also questioned about the latest developments with Isak following the match, responding: "It's a difficult one to answer.

"I hope it's resolved quickly, because it's news around us all the time. Players have managed to shut that out and perform. We have to continue to do that. We have to cope without the narrative against us."

When asked if the current situation would add an extra edge to the upcoming Liverpool match, he responded: "It's always spicy against Liverpool, there's a history to the fixture. We look forward to it. We know how good they are."

The Reds kicked off their season with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night. New signing Hugo Ekitike made his mark by scoring his first Anfield goal for the club, while late strikes from Federico Chiesa and Mo Salah clinched a dramatic win.

Newcastle triumphed over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March, and the league match at St James' Park in December ended in an enthralling 3-3 draw.
