Schalke chuffed with transfer to Newcastle United as money can help promotion fight

German side Schalke have been left delighted with Malick Thiaw’s move to Newcastle United, as they’ve pocketed from the deal.

That’s according to Der Westen, who explain that Schalke have earned important millions for their promotion fight thanks to Thiaw’s move to Newcastle this summer.

They explain that Schalke had been eagerly awaiting for Thiaw’s move to Newcastle to be completed as they’re earning several millions from the deal.

The defender is a product of their youth set up and was sold to AC Milan for €9m in 2022. That deal also included a resale fee of 10% on any profit that Milan made on a future sale.

Newcastle have reportedly signed him for a fee of €38m plus a further €4m in bonus payments, although the requirements for the latter are yet to be revealed.

Either way, Schalke will benefit, with just over €3m set to flow into their coffers alongside a solidarity contribution through FIFA’s scheme.

That’s money the German club will gladly accept as they’re not only cash strapped but could do with additional funds to secure potential transfers and bolster their squad for a promotion push back to the Bundesliga this season.

In fact, the hope is that money brought in from Newcastle’s deal can help them to secure a major signing.
