Tottenham 3-0 Burnley: Richarlison scissor kick helps Spurs to opening day victory

Thomas Frank enjoyed a perfect start to Premier League life in North London as Tottenham put three past newly promoted Burnley.

The Clarets returned to the ground where their last relegation in 2023/24 was confirmed and found themselves behind within ten minutes - striker Richarlison stroking home a sublime cross from Mohammed Kudus.

Despite some moments where the away side could have done better in front of goal, Spurs powered into an extra gear around the hour mark.

Richarlison doubled the lead with a sensational scissor kick, reminiscent of his goal against Serbia in the 2022 World Cup. Brennan Johnson then added a third quickly afterwards to seal their opening day victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Story of the Match

Tottenham made three changes from their midweek Super Cup defeat to PSG, with Brennan Johnson, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall coming into the eleven. Burnley handed new signings Kyle Walker, Quilindschy Hartman and Martin Dubravka their first starts since joining the club.

A moment of silence was observed before the match to remember Liverpool's Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car accident last month.

Dubravka was tested within thirty seconds of his debut as Bergvall forced a strong save from the Slovakia international from close range.

Tottenham kept up their vim in attack. Mohammed Kudus' tenacious work down the right hand side enabled him to whip a pinpoint cross to Richarlison, who slotted it into the far corner to put the hosts ahead after ten minutes.

The Clarets gradually grew into the game, - helped on occasion by some wayward passing from new Spurs captain Cristian Romero - though they struggled to get their chances on target.

Meanwhile, the Lilywhites were also finding it trickier to attack as the visitors occupied their box better and marshalled any attempts to get into the area.

Another sloppy ball from Romero gave Burnley another opportunity on the turnover. Former Tottenham defender Walker surged forward but his threaded through ball strayed wide of the onrushing Jaidon Anthony.

A barge from Pedro Porro on the winger was checked by VAR for a penalty before being swiftly waved away.

In the second period, Thomas Frank's side improved in making headways into the Burnley box. Richarlison carved out space to unleash a double strike. A block from Maxime Esteve and an agile stop from Dubravka denied the Brazilian a brace for the time being.

Scott Parker's men continued to pose problems. Anthony's delightful touch on the break fed Hannibal Mejbri, though the Tunisian could not get his shot away in time.

Seconds later, Burnley won the ball back and worked it well into the area. A cut back to Anthony gave the Englishman a deserved pop at goal, although the finish left a lot to be desired as Guglielmo Vicario caught it with ease.

Kudus darted past Hartman with a sudden change of pace. The Ghanian's lofted ball was met in stunning fashion by Richarlison, acrobatically firing the **North London**ers into a 2-0 lead.

Doubling their advantage injected some serious mojo into Spurs' play. Six minutes later Pape Matar Sarr took control of some excellent hold up play from Richarlison and laying it into the path of last season's top scorer Johnson. The Wales international deftly poked it past Dubravka to make it three.

Tottenham saw the game out with help from some strong substitutions in the form of Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha.

Burnley showed signs of promise that they will seek to refine for their meeting with Sunderland next week, while Spurs face the always tasty trip to Manchester City.

There were a slew of star turns for the hosts but no one shone quite as bright as Mohammed Kudus.

Starting with a lovely assist for the opener, the former West Ham winger combined silky forward work with gut-busting defensive contributions, earning him repeated applause from the home crowd.

Notching a second assist for Richarlison's volley, the 25-year-old was thoroughly entertaining to watch all afternoon. Including an exceptional first touch that Ronaldinho would be proud of.
