Giovanni Leoni start may come sooner than expected after 'shocking' Liverpool performance last night - opinion

Giovanni Leoni is the latest player to be brought in by Liverpool this summer.

The Reds have spent well over £200million on improving their first-team squad, and seeing as though Jarell Quansah hadn’t been replaced yet, the addition of the Italian centre-back makes a lot of sense.

Friday evening’s game against Bournemouth was too soon for him to be involved, but once he’s been integrated into the squad and is given an insight into how the team plays, Leoni could end up getting handed a start.

That is, especially after what happened with one Liverpool man in their 4-2 win over Bournemouth in their Premier League opener.

Jamie Carragher slams “shocking” Ibrahima Konate after performance against Bournemouth

Although there were one or two impressive performances from some of Liverpool’s players, the vast majority of the squad played well below par.

And, Ibrahima Konate was perhaps one of the worst on the pitch, with Milos Kerkez a close second.

While commentating on the game for Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts on the Frenchman’s rather shaky performance.

“What’s he doing? Oh my word. He’s been absolutely shocking this evening, Konate,” he said.

Although Joe Gomez now looks to have returned from the injury he sustained, Liverpool fans would likely rather see their Italian wonderkid given a chance instead.

The centre-back was a regular feature for Parma in the Serie A last season, with many of the top clubs from Italy trying to entice him with a move to their team.

However, seeing as though none of them wanted to fork out the asking price of £30million for Leoni, the Reds were the ones who ended up signing him.

The centre-back is 6’4 and, from looking at the way he carried himself last season, he could become a valuable asset to Arne Slot’s team this season.

Of course, an 18-year-old can’t be expected to play week-in and week-out, but after the performance that Konate put in against the Cherries, it’s clear that a change needs to be made.

Otherwise, Slot’s men could fall down a slippery slope and fail to retain the Premier League title, which, after their summer of spending, would be a catastrophic failure.
