Bruno Guimaraes explains why he has 'mixed feelings' as Newcastle United draw with Aston Villa

Bruno Guimaraes has spoken on social media following Newcastle United’s goalless draw against Aston Villa.

There were opportunities to win the game for both sides, but it is undoubtedly the Magpies who will be feeling like it was two points lost rather than a point gained at Villa Park.

Newcastle United drew 0-0 with 10-man Aston Villa, with their failure to take big chances evident throughout the game. Anthony Gordon filled in for Alexander Isak, who is not likely to play, in an attempt to force a move to Liverpool. The belief is that Isak is set to be fined by Newcastle officials for his absence.

Elsewhere, Gordon was praised by Eddie Howe for playing as a striker, when his natural position is on the left wing.

Newcastle will be hopeful that goals can still come in Isak’s absence, especially after the likes of Anthony Elanga missed big chances in the early stages.

With a point on the board for the 2025/26 season, Bruno Guimaraes has taken to social media to reflect on his side’s performance.

The Brazilian had a fairly quiet game at Villa Park, with midfield partners Sandro Tonali and Joelinton taking most of the plaudits for their efforts throughout the game.

A point was probably deserved for Newcastle, but it could have been much more if they had capitalised on Ezri Konsa’s red card six minutes after the hour mark.

It is Guimaraes’ second season as Newcastle captain, and he will be keen to bring more success to Tyneside after such a memorable 2024/25 campaign.

“Mixed feelings,” Guimaraes said on social media.

“I think we deserved more and I’m happy with the way we started. It’s never easy to debut away from home against a well-coached team. We stick together. Can’t wait for next Monday at St James’ Park. Howay the lads.”

Newcastle United must improve with a tough test against Liverpool ahead

Playing away at Aston Villa is one thing, but Newcastle now face a much tougher task when they welcome defending champions Liverpool to St James’ Park next Monday.

The game promises to be a lively one, especially with everything that has happened with Isak. Every player will be aware of the situation and will be keen on getting one over their Carabao Cup final opponents from last season.

St James’ Park will be rocking, but it is down to the players to deliver.

While Newcastle played well against Aston Villa, there will naturally be some concerns over whether the likes of Gordon can find the back of the net, or if Fabian Schar and Dan Burn can handle the pace of Hugo Ekitike, who rejected a move to the Magpies for Liverpool.

The Reds’ 4-2 win against Bournemouth on Friday night shows that they are not unstoppable, so the hope is that a good result can come Newcastle’s way.
