West Ham man’s agent is offering him around – Work permit situation could make move attractive

West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez is open to a return to Ajax, as he has the World Cup next summer in his viewfinder.

That’s according to journalist Mike Verweij, [via Ajax Showtime](https://www.ajaxshowtime.com/opinie/driessen-keurt-terugkeer-alvarez-streng-af-weer-een-gozer-die-alles-breed-speelt-net-als-henderson?comment=8437623), who reports that the West Ham midfielder’s agent is offering the midfielder around this summer.

Reports throughout this week have linked Álvarez with a return to his former club, where he made 147 appearances after arriving in 2019 before leaving for West Ham in a €38m deal in 2023.

It’s been suggested that he’s not a part of Graham Potter’s plans moving forwards and the door is open for a transfer this summer. Ajax manager John Heitinga has also welcomed the possibility of the move happening when asked about in his press conference this week.

It’s been made clear that any deal is dependent on Ajax getting rid of players first and making funds available, even if Álvarez was only to arrive from West Ham on loan.

The Mexican’s stance has not yet been discussed but Verweij believes he’d be open to the return, particularly with the World Cup on the horizon next summer.

“I know roughly what he earns in the Premier League. That’s a lot, so even loaning seems financially impossible at the moment,” he said.

“I just spoke to someone, and he’s been discussed at Ajax, but he’s not the number one player in that position at the moment. He could eventually be considered, and I think a lot of fans would love it if he came back, but he’s not the number one player, and right now it seems completely impossible.

“I do think West Ham wants to get rid of him, because his agent, Nathan van Kooperen, is quite busy peddling him and has offered him to other clubs. That also has to do with next year’s World Cup.

“His family can come here without a residence permit. That could play a role, and if he’s been told at West Ham that his role there will be reduced, then that could be very attractive.”
