Considering we finished the match with ten men, a point at home to Newcastle isn't a bad result. But had we lost today it wouldn't have been because Konsa got himself sent off.
It felt a little like we played not to lose and that bothers me a little because we have 38 matches in a season and we should be trying to win them all and pre-season is there to get you ready for the first match.
That said, I'm watching my fourth match of the opening weekend as I write this and while Manchester City are looking good, of the other matches I've watched, nobody has really looked ready and firing on all cylinders. So maybe that's it.
Maybe that's me just creating an excuse also because when you only have 38 matches, appearing to look like you're playing not to lose is why you finish 6th instead of fifth.
But I believe it's part of a bigger plan and I have trust in this manager. I think, when he talks about capacity, he's talking about playing players differently this season. Instead of making changes quite early, we might see more changes later in the game, but then we're going to see players rested more.
Maybe, after three or four matches Ollie gets a game off and then two or three where Malen is the man to start with Ollie supporting him. Maybe it's the same for some other players too. I don't remember the last time this manager only made one change and I think there is a reason.
We'll figure it out in time but I do think we are going to approach this season differently because if you believe the reports, we are going to have our hands tied financially. And as an optimist, I think we are approaching it differently this season on purpose.
I think this could also be me creating more reasons why we didn't win today. That said, three shots in 90 minutes at home isn't great, but we did get a point and arguably, Newcastle is our toughest League fixture in the opening two months, so it might not all be bad.
