Report: Man Utd want to sign ‘extraordinary’ La Liga star after Baleba deal collapses

Manchester United could explore a move for Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume before the transfer deadline, Spanish publication Fichajes has claimed.

The Red Devils have reportedly identified the 23-year-old Frenchman as a potential alternative to Brighton ace Carlos Baleba, and are closely monitoring him with just over two weeks left in the market.

United called off their pursuit of Baleba this week, as Brighton remain adamant the 21-year-old is not for sale despite strong interest from the Old Trafford hierarchy.

The Premier League giants are believed to have made several enquiries around the potential cost of signing Baleba, but have now accepted the deal would be too expensive at this stage and are expected to move on to other targets.

Agoume could be a valuable addition to Ruben Amorim’s squad this summer, having plied his trade in the top tiers of Spanish and French football in recent seasons and impressed with his physicality and ability to break down play in the middle of the field.

The ‘extraordinary’ midfielder, who is under contract until June 2028, played a key role in Sevilla’s domestic campaign last term, making 35 La Liga appearances and registering four goal contributions.

Agoume helped the Andalusian side narrowly avoid relegation, with the seven-time Europa League winners finishing 17th, just one point above the bottom three.

He joined Sevilla from Inter Milan last year, after making just four senior appearances for the Serie A giants, including a single cameo in their title-winning campaign in 2023/24.

Man United have spent heavily on rebuilding their frontline this summer, welcoming the trio of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko for a combined £210million.

The Red Devils have also added promising left-back Diego Leon and parted ways with Marcus Rashford, who joined Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

United remain hopeful of offloading several first-team outcasts before the deadline, as Alejandro Garnacho is in talks to join Chelsea, while Jadon Sancho has received an offer from Roma.

According to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano, the former Borussia Dortmund winger is still considering the proposal and has yet to make a decision over his next move.
