Terry McLaurin and the Commanders are reportedly close to a agreeing on a massive new contract extension

The Washington Commanders have spent a lot of time this offseason working towards agreeing to a new contract extension with star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. After making an eye-opening roster move involving McLaurin on Saturday morning, rumors have emerged suggesting that the team is close to finally agreeing to a deal with one of their best players.

McLaurin has been on the Commanders’ Physically Unable to Perform List since reporting to training camp, as he has been dealing with a bothersome ankle injury. On Saturday, McLaurin was activated off the list, and while the move reportedly had nothing to do with his contract negotiations, that may not be entirely true.

Terry McLaurin, Commanders Nearing $30 Million Per Year Contract Extension

Washington selected McLaurin in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he has since become one of the most consistent wide receivers in the league. In 2024, McLaurin turned in the best season of his career, catching 82 passes for 1,096 yards and touchdowns, earning the second Pro Bowl selection of his career, in addition to a spot on the All-Pro Second Team.

As he prepared to enter the final year of his current contract, McLaurin voiced his desire for a new deal early in the offseason. His demands proved to be too much for the Commanders to stomach, and when he didn’t get what he was looking for, he skipped mandatory minicamp and the beginning of training camp.

McLaurin eventually reported to training camp, but he still didn’t take the practice field, conducting a hold-in instead. While getting activated off the PUP list is an encouraging step forward, McLaurin still needs a new contract before he takes the field. According to a recent rumor, though, it sounds like the Commanders are close to handing him a deal worth $30 million per year.

“Spooky season is coming! Terry McLaurin will be getting a new deal from the Commanders worth $30M per year and the extension should be completed before the season as details are still being finalized. A new deal for Scary Terry is coming!” RickeyScoops shared in a post on X.

The start of the 2025 campaign is right around the corner, and the Commanders are going to want McLaurin at their disposal when they take the field. That means getting these contract extension talks to the finish line, and while there is still work to be done, it seems like these negotiations may be finally coming to an end.

With McLaurin and new star wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the fold, Washington’s offense could take another step forward after their impressive breakout season in 2024. There’s no doubt that this process has been long and painful, but the end is in sight, and the sooner the Commanders can get McLaurin to put pen to paper on a new deal, the better their chances of going on a Super Bowl run will be.
