Last season is a burden on the heart. Finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final are still fresh. Exiting European competition in the 2025/26 season is a reality no Manchester United fan can easily accept. Ruben Amorim took over midway through last season, but the pace of change has been slow.
In the summer, the club tried to raise hope with new faces. The arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo became the talk of the town, while young Diogo Leon also came on board. However, the signing of Benjamin Sesko caused the most buzz, especially after Rasmus Hojlund’s lacklustre performance last season.

This season is a chance for United to make a comeback, but the lack of depth in midfield is still a cause for concern. Carlos Baleba’s name came up as an option, but Brighton’s high demand stopped the deal. Casemiro is in the last phase of his career, and Christian Eriksen is no longer a part of the team. In such a situation, there are big expectations from Mason Mount.
Trust in Mason Mount and his new role
In the press conference, Amorim made it clear that Mount can play in deep midfield. He believes that Mount’s energy can give a different rhythm to the team.
As per Manchester Evening News, here is what Amorim said:
“Maybe Mason Mount is a player who can play in that position if we want something different. But we have players to cope and win games in the Premier League.”
In our opinion, Mount’s role in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system will be interesting. He is good with his passing, and the Englishman is adept at moving the ball forward quickly when on song, which will directly benefit the trio of Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo. However, in this position, he will also have to shoulder defensive responsibility.
If Mount can gel with Bruno Fernandes, the midfield could be balanced. Fernandes’ experience and Mount’s dynamism would give the team a new direction. After last season’s disappointment, this possible change is a sign of hope for fans. If all goes according to Amorim’s plan, this season could be the start of United’s rebirth. However, it will definitely be a challenge for Mount, given that he has not proved himself yet with out jersey.
