Kyle Williams leaves Patriots-Vikings preseason game with apparent head injury

Two preseason games, two wide receiver injuries for the New England Patriots.

One week after seeing Ja’Lynn Polk go down with an apparent arm or shoulder injury, the team lost another wideout on Saturday versus the Minnesota Vikings. Third-round draft pick Kyle Williams got banged up on a reception in the second quarter, and did not return after leaving the game.

Williams’ injury happened with five minutes left in the first half. Running an in-breaking route on a 3rd-and-4, he reached above his head to reel in backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs’ pass. After the catch, however, the rookie absorbed a hard hit to the head and was slow to get up.

Williams initially left for the blue medical tent on the sidelines under his own power, and departed for the locker room shortly thereafter. He had caught three passes for 24 yards at that point.

The 69th overall selection in this year’s draft, Williams has served as a top five wide receiver for the Patriots throughout the summer alongside Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins. While not a consistent member of the starting lineup, he was a lock to make the team due to his draft status as well as his abilities to stretch the field vertically.

His injury, however, makes for an uncertain outlook.

The Patriots will play the New York Giants in their preseason finale on Thursday, Aug. 21. They will need to finalize their 53-man roster by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
