Arsenal plot raid on Barcelona for 28-year-old mainstay with 59 international caps

Arsenal are angling for a Bosman move for Frenkie de Jong for next summer when his contract with Barcelona comes to an end.

According to Fichajes, Arsenal have made their presence felt in the race for Frenkie de Jong if he happens to leave Barcelona as a free agent next summer. The 59-cap Netherlands international has a year left on his deal, with a renewal with Barcelona already in troubled waters, as a change of scenery could be on the cards.

Arsenal are reportedly interested in a Bosman move for Frenkie de Jong when his contract with Barcelona expires next summer. The Dutchman, with 59 international caps, has been an imperative part of the Blaugrana’s setup, with Hansi Flick considering him an undisputed starter at the current moment.

Another Arsenal target, Marc Casado, was a superb deputy for the Dutchman last season when de Jong was recovering from an injury. However, since the midfielder’s return to fitness, he has been the mainstay in Flick’s midfield setup alongside Pedri.

However, Frenkie de Jong’s contractual situation has caused concern around the club, with the club still unable to agree on a new deal owing to plenty of complications. The Catalan giants reportedly want the midfielder to take a pay cut if he wishes to stay, which may not resonate well with the Dutch star.

Hence, there is a possibility that de Jong could move on from the club on a free transfer next summer when his deal with Barcelona ends. Such a scenario will not please Flick, although the 59-cap Netherlands international has been giving out signs such as being keen to part ways with his current agent.

Arsenal are interested in Frenkie de Jong

Mikel Arteta wishes to keep building his midfield options despite having formidable options such as Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi. Arsenal had held an interest in de Jong for a while now, but with his potential availability on a free transfer, they could step up their chase, especially if the 28-year-old mainstay fails to renew with Barcelona.

Having Frenkie de Jong, Zubimendi, and Rice will make the Gunners a formidable team on all fronts, as Arteta wants to keep building a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League and Champions League. Whether they can land the midfielder remains the question, owing to his wage demands as well as expected competition from top rivals.
