Nottingham Forest will begin their English Premier League 2025/26 campaign on August 17 when they host Brentford at the City Ground. After finishing seventh last season with 65 points in 38 games, Forest fans will be hoping the team can build on that success.
At one stage, they were even looking set for a Champions League spot, but unfortunately, they failed to finish strong. But this season, starting the journey at home makes the season opener even more important.
However, pre-season has not gone as planned. In seven friendlies, Forest scored only one goal, which has left fans worried ahead of the opener. Five matches ended in goalless draws, while they lost 1-3 to Fulham and 0-1 to Birmingham.
Now, with the league about to begin, manager Nuno Espírito Santo addressed the media. At his pre-match press conference, he spoke about the squad, transfers, and the challenges his team faces before taking on Brentford.
“Cannot project the success for this season right now”
When asked about his main objectives for the new season, Nuno explained why it is too early to set clear targets.
"I cannot project the success or the main objective of this season right now because we don't know who's going to be here, when they're going to be here and how long it's going to take them to adapt," he said.
“Short of options”
The Portuguese coach admitted that Forest are short of options in certain areas, but he stressed that the squad is still motivated and ready.
"One thing I always like and prioritise as a coach is getting the squad ready as soon as possible. This way, we have the chance to create bonds and complexities that we can try over and over again. We haven't had the chance to do that. They are still motivated, and the confidence is there to fight," he said.
“They will pose a tough test”
Nuno also praised Brentford, calling them a dangerous opponent under Keith Andrews.
He said: "I've already told the players that this is what we have for now so we need to get together to be stronger. We have to make an extra effort, so even if you're not playing in your position, you're still helping the team. Those that are here are focused and ready to compete."
“We need players”
The Forest boss openly admitted that the club is working to bring in reinforcements. He confirmed that up to four signings are being discussed, though they will not be ready for the season opener.
"I think things are moving, with medicals and other details, so let's see. We need players. They for sure won't be available for Sunday but, after that, these potential signings will make us better and stronger," Nuno revealed.
On the subject of contracts, Nuno underlined the importance of keeping key men at the club. Callum Hudson-Odoi, who played a vital role last season, is one such player.
"It’s a priority to try to settle down" players like Hudson-Odoi, he said, stressing the need to "maintain the core of the squad."
“Fans’ unconditional support and a promise of fight”
Finally, Nuno called on Forest fans to give their full backing at the City Ground.
"We are fortunate enough that the supporters nowadays know a lot about what's going on. They only have to look at the squad, and in their minds they are thinking: 'we might need other options.' The fans know, but I ask for their unconditional support. I know they are going to be noisy, they will help us, and I promise we will fight," he said.
