The Detroit Lions fell 24-17 to the Miami Dolphins in their second preseason game, but the scoreboard doesn’t tell the whole story. Preseason is about evaluating depth, and Saturday’s game in Detroit gave us a pretty good look at where things stand. Here are my three biggest takeaways.
Detroit Lions preseason loss to Dolphins
1. Kyle Allen Is QB2 — Period.
If there was any debate about who should back up Jared Goff, Kyle Allen ended it against Miami. Allen was sharp, efficient, and in full command of the offense. He completed 14-of-17 passes for 124 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a 136.3 passer rating, leading Detroit to a first-half lead.
Meanwhile, Hendon Hooker struggled again. He went 6-of-13 for 61 yards and an interception, posting a 28.0 passer rating. It’s clear Allen gives Detroit the steadier option behind Goff right now, and barring a late surge from Hooker, QB2 is locked up.
2. Isaac TeSlaa Is Ready for a Bigger Role
Rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa continues to shine. On Saturday, he hauled in 4 catches for 41 yards and a touchdown, including a highlight-reel grab in the endzone where he “Mossed” a Dolphins defender.
With veteran Tim Patrick banged up and inconsistent in camp, TeSlaa has positioned himself as Detroit’s likely No. 3 wideout behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. For a rookie, he looks poised, physical, and ready to contribute right away.

3. Jackson Meeks Making a Push at WR6
Another receiver making noise? Jackson Meeks. He caught 7 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown, leading all Lions receivers in production against Miami.
Early in camp, I believed Dominic Lovett had the edge for the WR6 spot. But Meeks has stacked strong performances and keeps showing up when given reps. If Detroit keeps six receivers, Meeks has a real chance to snag one of the final roster spots.
Final Word
Yes, the Lions lost 24-17. But if you’re a fan, the story isn’t about the scoreboard, it’s about clarity. Kyle Allen has secured QB2, Isaac TeSlaa looks like a difference-maker right out of the gate, and Jackson Meeks is forcing his way into the conversation.
Preseason is about finding answers. Against Miami, Detroit got a few big ones.
