Four things we learnt from Burnley's defeat at Tottenham

Burnley were comfortably beaten by the current holders of the Europa League trophy, Tottenham Hotspur, in a three-goal loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In a difficult game, what was learnt from how Burnley played against the North London side?

Defensive Frailties

Burnley set up in the 5-2-2-1 set up that they used during pre-season against Lazio. With the hope of being strong defensively during the match.

However, this was not necessarily what occurred on a difficult afternoon in North London.

With the three goals that Burnley conceded being easily avoidable from their defensive point of view.

As the opening goal from Richarlison came from sloppy play from Burnley. As Maxime Esteve initially did not make a convincing attempt of clearing the ball from the left hand side allowing for debutant Mohammed Kudus to recover the ball and put a cross into the 18 yard box that Richarlison connected with on the volley.

The defending from within the 18 yard box was lazy from Burnley's perspective and will be something that they will want to iron out from their game as Hjalmar Ekdal seemingly fell asleep, allowing Richarlison to have plenty of space to get a clean shot off.

This defensive sloppiness happened multiple times throughout the match with players being too slow on the ball when in their own defensive third often being dispossessed and instantly being put on the back foot.

Oliver Sonne and Josh Laurent particularly had a tough time on their Premier League debuts.

There was many instances where both players looked a yard off the pace for Premier League football and looked a step behind the flow of the game.

Showing Burnley's need to add quality to the squad in midfield and defence especially if they want to move forward with the 5-2-2-1 set up that manager Scott Parker has been utilising.

Lack of attacking talent

With the scoreline at 1-0 in Tottenham's favour. Burnley began to find their foothold in the game leading to them finding themselves in attacking positions.

These positive positions often came to no real threat on Tottenham's goal with many opportunities ending in a long range attempt on goal.

In the second half Burnley created two good chances that could have levelled the game at a 1-1 scoreline.

However, the lack of quality that Burnley possess in attack came to haunt them once again.

With Hannibal squandering a glorious chance by delaying at the chance to get a shot off and ultimately ending in him being dispossessed.

And another chance shortly after being squandered by, winger, Jaidon Anthony as he slipped and failed to make a clean connection on his shot at goal from inside the Tottenham 18 yard box.

Highlighting the need for Burnley to work on the composure of their attackers or the need to utilise the transfer market once again and sign attackers that have goal-scoring instincts and don't squander a lot of their chances when they have them.

However, it was not all doom and gloom for Burnley as there was still some positives to take despite falling to a heavy defeat on the opening game of the new season.

The new 5-2-2-1 tactical set up

For around 40 minutes of the match Burnley showed that the new set up can be effective as they kept Tottenham quiet and worked their way into the game.

With continuous work in training the team will become more familiar with their roles and it has the potential to be effective in games if concentration levels are kept high for the full 90 minutes.

However, this set up requires quality players that Burnley did not have available at their dispense during this game.

As it was shown certain players were not necessarily at a Premier League standard and are required to be upgraded if Burnley want the best chance to remain in the Premier League.

Burnley's bright sparks

In what was a disappointing game for many players in the Burnley team. There was still players that could hold their head high with the effort that they put in.

Lyle Foster, in particular, being one of the bright sparks for Scott Parker's team.

As the South African striker gave one hundred per cent effort all game and made Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven uncomfortable at times with his constant running in behind and working to win the second ball.

Sadly, not many of his teammates matched his energy and effort so it ended in vain for the striker.

Maxime Esteve once again showed why he receives such vocal praise from the Burnley faithful.

Despite his poor display for the opening goal of the game, he went on to grow into the game and showed why he was widely regarded as the best defender in the Championship last season.

If Burnley can add another quality defender alongside the French man they have the potential to build a solid base that they can expand on and then improve the quality in the forward areas.

Burnley debutant Lesley Ugochukwu made a cameo off the substitution bench on the 63rd minute and showed he has the quality to play in midfield for the Clarets in the Premier League.

Showing a quality that Josh Laurent does not possess as he was composed on the ball and managed to keep up to pace with the game never looking a step behind the flow of the game.
