Kyle Shanahan made his stance on embattled 49ers kicker crystal clear

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's patience with embattled kicker Jake Moody might have ran out.

Sure, Moody apparently won the training camp kicking competition over Greg Joseph, as the Niners released the latter. But, not long thereafter, Shanahan told reporters how Moody is still competing with every free-agent kicker out there after seriously massive struggles late in 2024.

That competition with all those available kickers didn't exactly turn in Moody's favor in preseason Week 2's bout against the Las Vegas Raiders.

And there's one third-quarter series that fully revealed Shanahan's true sentiments.

Kyle Shanahan seems to have had enough of Jake Moody, and it shows

Moody missed a field goal from 53 yards out early in the game, which incurred the wrath of many a San Francisco fan, including this guy:

Then, late in the third quarter with the 49ers in the red zone, Shanahan's offense faced a 4th-and-3 at Las Vegas' 3-yard line.

After the miss, KPIX 5's Tim Ryan pointed out how it might be a good idea for Shanahan to give Moody a chip shot to get his confidence back, but the head coach opted to go for it -- a scenario that might make more sense in the regular season but not necessarily in a meaningless preseason bout.

Yet Shanahan opted to go for it, only to see offensive lineman Isaiah Prince commit a false-start penalty, which backed up the offense 5 yards and made it 4th-and-8.

Moody was subsequently brought in, but his 26-yard try barely made it inside the left upright.

Still an adventure, and that one won't help convince Shanahan the third-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft is worth retaining on the 53-man roster. And not even the game-winning 59-yard field goal to close things out help re-establish the needed consistency Moody has yet to display.

At this point, fair or not, Moody might simply have to be perfect all season long to get back into the fanbase's good graces, and that's only if Shanahan opts to continue giving him chances.

Judging by this lone series of plays in which the head coach opted to go for it on 4th-and-short, it seems as if Moody's time is limited.
