NFL preseason Saturday afternoon roundup: Alabama alumnus posts 3 sacks for Patriots

New England Patriots linebacker Anfernee Jennings recorded three sacks during a 20-12 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in an NFL preseason game on Saturday afternoon.

A former Dadeville High School and Alabama standout, Jennings has 5.5 sacks in 61 NFL regular-season games. But he took down Minnesota rookie quarterback Max Brosmer three times in the second half on Saturday.

Brosmer also was intercepted by New England safety Kyle Dugger in the end zone on a throw from the Patriots 13-yard line on the final snap of the game.

In the other five NFL preseason games played on Saturday afternoon:

Third-team quarterback Quinn Ewers threw two second-half touchdown passes and the Miami defense turned back Detroit at the Dolphins 13-yard line with 22 seconds to play to preserve a 24-17 victory over the Lions.

Carolina starting quarterback Bryce Young was 0-for-2 and backup Andy Dalton sustained an elbow injury, leaving third-team QB Jack Plummer to run the Panthers’ offense for most of the game. Houston intercepted Plummer twice and limited Carolina to 164 yards in the Texans’ 20-3 victory.

A 30-yard, fourth-down completion to the Green Bay 1-yard line with seven seconds to play was overturned on video review, and the Packers held on for a 23-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Each team had a pick-six, but the Philadelphia Eagles offense gained only 88 yards in a 22-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Jake Moody kicked a 59-yard field goal on the game’s final snap after safety Jaylen Mahoney intercepted a pass with 13 seconds to play to lift the San Francisco 49ers to a 22-19 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Moody had made a 44-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining to tie the score.
