Matty Longstaff makes another move after emotional Newcastle United exit in 2023

Matty Longstaff has followed in his brother’s footsteps and found himself a new club following his Newcastle United exit two years ago.

The summer transfer window has been a busy one, despite the fact that several players have rejected a move to Tyneside.

As many players have left the Magpies as others have joined, with midfielder Sean Longstaff being one of them. Longstaff joined Leeds United for £15million to get more game time in the Premier League.

After completing his move, Longstaff stated that he feels wanted at Leeds, whereas at Newcastle, he had begun slipping down the pecking order.

Newcastle are replacing Longstaff with Jacob Ramsey, but in the meantime, his brother Matty has made another move for himself after his emotional departure from his boyhood club in 2023.

Matty Longstaff signs for CF Montreal two years after leaving Newcastle United

Thankfully, Longstaff has been able to find his feet at a new club after leaving the Magpies, even if it took longer than he first thought.

The midfielder left Newcastle while recovering from an ACL injury, but was allowed to continue his recovery at the club’s training centre before moving on. Longstaff was playing for Toronto in the MLS, but has now made the move to CF Montreal, Toronto’s league rivals.

His move was confirmed as a player + cash swap deal, and will represent the Canadian side for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Longstaff made 57 appearances for Toronto after signing on a free transfer in 2024. The 25-year-old will be in line to make his Montreal debut when they take on D.C. United on Sunday morning.

When Matty Longstaff knew his Newcastle United career was over

Longstaff would be very beneficial to Newcastle right now. The Magpies need club-trained players for their UEFA squad registration, and he is a perfect match for it. However, it may be a long time before the North Shields-raised star comes back to Tyneside, if ever.

The midfielder made his way into Newcastle’s starting XI thanks to Steve Bruce, but he was unable to find the same fortune under Eddie Howe, who sent him out on loan soon after his arrival.

However, the moment he truly knew his Newcastle career was over was when the historic takeover of the club was confirmed. Longstaff admitted he knew his time at Newcastle was up when PIF arrived, though he was still delighted that the club had transformed into what it has become today.

“As a fan, I was buzzing [about the takeover],” he said.

“You just have to look at where they are now and where they can go. That made me so happy.

“But I wasn’t stupid, I was thinking, ‘That’s me done at Newcastle, I need to move on’.”
