Leeds United may look to sign 17-cap Greek international Fotis Ioannidis from Panathinaikos in the summer transfer window.
According to an update by French journalist Sebastien Vidal, Fotis Ioannidis is the subject of interest from Leeds United. The Whites are keen on bolstering their offensive unit in the summer transfer window by signing a striker. So, the Panathinaikos centre-forward has emerged as a target for the newly promoted Premier League club.
While the 2024/25 EFL Championship winners have already signed two strikers in the ongoing transfer window, including star arrival Dominic Calvert-Lewin, they remain eager to add another centre-forward to Daniel Farke’s squad. The decision-makers at Leeds United view Ioannidis as a “more complete forward” to pair up with Calvert-Lewin in the final third.
Fotis Ioannidis and his career so far
Fotis Ioannidis has established himself as one of the most highly-regarded attackers in his homeland since joining Panathinaikos from APO Levadiakos in August 2020. While the 25-year-old has not been as prolific as he would have liked in the last 12 months, he has made considerable progress at the Super League club.
The Greek striker has amassed 51 goals and 15 assists in nearly 200 appearances thus far for Panathinaikos. Meanwhile, Ioannidis’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Premier League outfits, in particular, have been keen on signing him, with Leeds United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Premier League adventure beckons?
Leeds United’s interest in Fotis Ioannidis is perplexing. The Whites remain in the market for a striker despite signing Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the ongoing transfer window. So, it is unclear why the 2024/25 EFL Championship title winners want to sign another centre-forward this summer.
Nevertheless, several candidates, including Ermedin Demirovic, have emerged on Leeds United’s radar, with Ioannidis the latest striker they have identified as a target in the summer transfer window. They are also keen on signing Beto, with talks to sign the Guinea-Bissau international from Everton beginning.
As for Ioannidis, the decision-makers at Leeds United view the 25-year-old Greek international as a “more complete forward” to pair up with Calvert-Lewin in the final third. It will be interesting to see if the Panathinaikos striker moves to Elland Road in the coming days.
