Leeds United’s Premier League opening day record reveals impact of Elland Road

Leeds United kick-off their Premier League campaign under the lights at Elland Road on Monday - a repeat of the 2000/01 campaign.

That day, United won out 2-0, thanks to a first-half brace from Alan Smith. Leeds would finish fourth that season, qualifying for the UEFA Cup. This time around, a mere 17th place would be suffice.

Since the Premier League split from the EFL in 1992, Leeds have played in 15 top-flight seasons. United have opened their Premier League campaign at Elland Road in eight of them - and attain a good record too.

They have gone undefeated across all opening fixtures in the Premier League when handed a home fixture and have won on five occasions - including the last time, a 2-1 triumph over Wolves at the start of the 2022/23 season.

In their 15 first-day fixtures overall, six games have been won, seven drawn and just two lost. Those two opening defeats have come in their last three Premier League seasons; 5-1 away at Manchester United in 2021 (heaviest opening defeat) and 4-3 away at Liverpool in 2020 (highest-scoring occasion).

Leeds have scored in each of their maiden Premier League games of the season bar one - a goalless draw with Derby County in the 1999/2000 campaign. In fact, every time they have failed to score on the opening day the game has ended goalless.

The only occasion Leeds failed to score more than once in the opening fixture when at home was a 1-1 tie with Arsenal in the 1997/98 term. The biggest opening day win was a 3-0 defeat of Manchester City in the 2002/03 season.

Regardless of the margin, Leeds would take a win on the opening night - or if not then at least a point. Previous records and a historically vibrant Elland Road should give them confidence of achieving that.

Tough games against Arsenal and Newcastle United follow before a period in which Leeds will hope to rack up the points. A good start would instil optimism and ensure Leeds do not get off to a pointless first month.
