Pittsburgh Steelers lose massive offensive lineman to a head injury

PITTSBURGH --Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Gareth Warren has a head injury after diving for a fumble in the fourth quarter of the team’s second preseason game, head coach Mike Tomlin said.

The injury occurred after a fourth quarter interception when the defender fumbled the football and Warren attempted to dive on the ball, landing straight on his head. He stayed down on the ground for some time before getting up and heading into the blue medical tent for evaluation.

Warren is 328 pounds while running a 5.22 40-yard dash with a 1.81 10-yard split. Warren has 33 5/8-inch arms, giving him enough length to stay at offensive tackle if that is what the Steelers view him as heading into the offseason.

The Steelers have moved him around times, putting him at both tackle spots and shifting him inside to guard at times, but he has settled in at tackle throughout much of the preseason.

The Lindenwood product found his way to Pittsburgh after his agent called to say they were interested and wanted to sign him. Warren, in an interview on ‘Steelers Afternoon Drive’ explains how that all came about.

My agent called me up after the draft, and usually, you get signed in that time, but he told me some teams were interested in me, and so, I got the invite from the Steelers,”Warren said. “And I wanted to take it and do my best. I went into the week and was like, ‘Just play your game, learn fast, and it’s going to mentally and physically exhaust, but this what you worked for and dreamed for.’

Warren signed with the Steelers after a rookie minicamp tryout, and now is trying to make a push for the practice squad or 53-man roster.
