Manchester United are allegedly considering a surprising swoop for former goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Spanish shot-stopper spent 12 years at Old Trafford, racking up 545 appearances in all competitions and helping the club secure the Premier League title, Europa League, FA Cup and two League Cups.

De Gea departed United in 2023 when his contract ran out, with Erik ten Hag opting to bring in Andre Onana as his replacement.

Following a year without a club, De Gea moved to Fiorentina in 2024, where the 34-year-old has made a strong impression in Serie A.

After guiding Fiorentina to sixth place last term and securing Conference League qualification, De Gea penned a fresh deal lasting until 2028, reports the Mirror.

However, The Sun reports that his new contract contains a release clause allowing him to depart for a 'relatively modest fee'.

The publication claims United are mulling over a potential homecoming for De Gea after being 'informed' about the clause.

De Gea recently made an emotional return to Old Trafford with Fiorentina for a pre-season friendly, hinting that their "paths may cross again".

Following a presentation of a framed photograph from United skipper Bruno Fernandes, De Gea posted on social media: "A magical moment for me and my family to come back to Old Trafford - my home.

"From the bottom of my heart - I want to say thank you for the reception - for all the love you showed me. To the supporters that never stopped being with me throughout my time at this club. Our paths may cross again."

Since his move from Inter Milan to United, Onana has struggled to impress, and Ruben Amorim recently hinted that the goalkeeper's position as the first choice is in jeopardy. "Andre is like the other players," Amorim stated ahead of United's opening match against Arsenal.

"They all have to win their place, so I'm not going to say if one player is No.1. He's ready to go to the game, so let's wait. Me as a coach and the players can do better than last year - and I have full confidence in that."

Onana has let in 148 goals during his two seasons at United, and the Red Devils have been linked with several potential replacements this summer. However, their main focus has been on bolstering their attack.
