Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson will still be the starter for the New York Giants despite the sizzling start for rookie Jaxson Dart.
Wilson dazzled with a moon ball to Beaux Collins that went for 80 yards, flashing his still elite skill. He also threw an interception later, ending his day 10 of 14 for 136 yards with the interception and a passer rating of 71.4.
Dart, on the other hand, took off with flying colors. In the preseason Dart has 291 passing yards and two touchdowns on 26 of 35 passing while putting up a 117.7 passer rating.
Despite that hot start, Giants head coach Brian Daboll says there is no chance for Dart to claim the starting spot. Wilson will remain their starter while Dart sits and develops behind Wilson.
“Russ is our starter and we’re going to keep developing Jaxson,” Daboll said.
The Giants signed Jameis Winston. Wilson, and drafted Dart in an effort to figure out the quarterback position that has plagued them since Eli Manning’s exit from the franchise.
Wilson’s play tailed off sharply toward the end of the season. On top of that, a report dropped in January that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith took away Wilson’s ability to work at the line of scrimmage. That could have irked people in the organization.
Wilson will be the starter for the Giants and could earn up to $21 million in the Big Apple with an incentive-laden contract.
