'You have to wonder': Wayne Rooney makes big statement regarding Alexander Isak and Liverpool…

· 17 August 2025, 10:00

**Match of the Day returned to our screens last night as the Premier League season returned, and while Newcastle United fans had to wait until the penultimate game to see the Toon highlights, they were treated to yet another in-depth discussion about Alexander Isak.**

The Alexander Isak situation has dominated Newcastle's summer, with everyone just desperate for a resolution now so we can move on and focus on something else.

Everybody is sick of talking about it now, but it's such a fascinating study that nobody can help themselves. So while Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer did speak about the actual game against Aston Villa for a moment or two on the BBC's highlights show, the conversation soon turned to Isak.

It would have been difficult not to mention him last night, as it felt pretty clear that Isak had been playing, Newcastle would have comfortably beaten Villa yesterday.

Wayne Rooney says Alexander Isak has gone about things the wrong way

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, though, Isak was at home with his trotters up, smoking a pipe and eating caviar off a naked model's stomach - or whatever people earning £140,000-a-week do.

Wayne Rooney got stuck into Isak for the way he's gone about trying to get his move and even made the point that it could cause Liverpool to have second thoughts.

> “The fact that he is refusing to come in and train is very difficult for him to come back.“He’s just gone about it in the wrong way. Maybe he’s getting advised wrongly. But also for Liverpool, you have to wonder if that is the sort of player you want. Someone who is going to desert his teammates and walk away from a huge football club.

> “It’s a good opportunity to go to Liverpool, but it has to be done in the right way.”

Wayne Rooney's point was good until you remember...

When you hear it, it's a very good point Rooney is making. Until you realise, Yoane Wissa is doing the same thing at Brentford to force a move to Newcastle.

It can't be good for one and not the other. Dango Ouatarra's move to Brentford from Bournemouth is progressing, which means we'll likely see movement on Wissa very soon, and even though he's not been training fully, Eddie Howe could do with throwing him straight in against Liverpool next week.

The way we look at it, if you've worked so hard to force a move, you should be giving that little bit extra when you arrive at the club you coveted so much that you alienated everybody. Wissa may lack match sharpness, but if he was serious about the move to Newcastle, he should have been making sure he's in top condition. We'll soon find out.
