Everything’s the Best: Off to the Races

Liverpool Football Club opened the season on Friday with a rollercoaster win over Bournemouth. Nearly making good on the 2-nil cliche, a late goal from Federico Chiesa ensured that the Reds would be able to properly celebrate kicking off the season.

It felt like a fitting return given the state of things off the pitch: topsy turvy and unpredictable. The result, of course, injecting a bit of optimistic contrast to the off-pitch reality. The break felt both too long and brief simultaneously, with this result being just what I’d personally been needing.

Time without football is always hard for me personally; I don’t think I’ve followed a club and sport as intensely as I have Liverpool and football broadly. And that’s a statement given how meticulous my baseball card collection was as a kid. So, not having the weekend morning ritual of throwing the football match on while my coffee brews is a challenge to adjust to, come summer.

This break, in particular, was heavy given the loss of Diogo Jota on the Liverpool FC side of things. When you tally up the fascistic chaos in my part of the world - which intensified almost as soon as the season wrapped - the longing for something familiar and soothing felt all the more intense.

The start of a new campaign also has the air of ringing in the end of Summer and heralding the arrival of Fall. The chilled air being a much welcome part of this section of the calendar.

New starts and a turning of the page. That’s what I kept thinking as I watched the new look Reds secure three points. Change all around, even within the club itself. But the Reds taking three points? That felt familiar in the most comfortable of ways.
