Liverpool in line to profit if Blackburn Rovers offload wantaway star

Blackburn Rovers will have to send a portion of any Lewis Travis sale fee to Liverpool due to a sell-on clause, according to Alan Nixon.

Blackburn Rovers haven’t had an ideal start to the season, losing all of their first three games across all competitions so far.

An opening day loss to West Brom was followed up by a Carabao Cup upset versus Bradford City. And, on Saturday, two late goals from Birmingham City saw them emerge 2-1 victors at Ewood Park.

Things have been made tougher by the absence of their captain Lewis Travis, who has not been involved after informing the club of a desire to join Derby County. The Rams – led by former Rovers boss John Eustace – saw a £1.5m bid rejected, but are offering big money to Travis, and he’s keen to make the switch.

Now, writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon has revealed that reigning Premier League champions Liverpool are due a portion of any fee received by Blackburn Rovers.

Travis was in the Liverpool academy from 2004 to 2015 before moving to Ewood Park in the summer of 2015, linking up with the Rovers’ U18s. Nixon states a sell-on clause was agreed between the two clubs upon the move, and will land a windfall if he makes a move 10 years on.

Blackburn Rovers want £3m for Travis, with their demands partly down to the fact some of the proceeds would be sent to Merseyside. Ismael insisted in the week that he can go for the right price.

An ugly end to a reliable servant’s Blackburn Rovers stay

Travis has long cut a popular figure at Blackburn Rovers. He proved himself at U21 level before first tasting senior action in the 2017/18 season, when they were down in League One under the management of Tony Mowbray.

The 27-year-old has been a regular since, locking down a place in defensive midfield with his tough-tackling and combative play style. Offering an assured presence on the ball too, Travis’ game developed and he grew into a leadership role, ultimately landing him the club captaincy in 2022.

Unfortunately though, a stand-off over a new contract has made his situation at Ewood Park messy, and amid a reported desire to move on for a fee – rather than for nothing next summer – he has expressed his desire to move on.

Ismael dodged questions over the player again after the Birmingham City loss, and it remains to be seen just what the final weeks of the summer transfer window bring.

Lewis Travis saga prompts Rovers captaincy uncertainty

Travis’ desire to move on has quickly prompted debate over who will take over the club captaincy if he is to move on.

Sondre Tronstad would likely be the first choice of many at Blackburn Rovers as he has donned the armband twice this season and filled in for Travis last season too.

However, in an intriguing development, Todd Cantwell led the team out against Birmingham City on Saturday. This was despite Tronstad and Dom Hyam – another leading figure – both starting as well.

Ismael would have a big decision to make over his next skipper if Travis is to move on, with a couple of candidates seemingly under consideration.
