PITTSBURGH -- Logan Lee is most often known as a nose tackle or defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played plenty of that on Saturday, but had to go deeper into his bag to help the Steelers.
Lee is the backup long snapper after the Steelers release Tucker Addington a week ago, and the defensive lineman did well enough to where there were no noticeable hiccups in the team’s special teams operations.
Head coach Mike Tomlin was not surprised that Lee could do it, as the second-year Iowa product practices long snapping every day before and after practice, just in case Christian Kuntz goes down.
So, when Kuntz suffered a chest injury on Saturday, Lee rolled out there and went with the punches.
“I grew up in a town of 1900, so I played every special teams, offense and defense. So it was just - we needed bodies, so I was a snapper,“ Lee said.
During Lee’s senior year of college, he started to pick long snapping back up at the suggestion of his defensive line coach, Kelvin Bell.
Now, Lee is hoping some of that utility can land him on the Steelers’ roster, even if there were some hiccups present in a few of the snaps to his eye.
“I need to clean up a few of them, but all things considered, yeah, I’m happy with the way it went,” Lee said.
Tomlin gave Lee his praise despite the youngster downplaying what he did.
“I certainly was pleased with the work that Logan gave us tonight. He’s worked that since he’s been here. Versatility helps him and helps us,” Tomlin said.
How long Kuntz will miss is unknown, but for now, Lee will step in as the team’s long snapper. Meanwhile, he is still embroiled in a competition to make the roster in the team’s nose tackle rotation, which has become more competitive over the weeks.
