Two Manchester City players stay behind to applaud the Wolves fans after Diogo Jota tribute

Diogo Jota was commemorated during the pre-match proceedings for Wolves vs Manchester City, and fans continued to celebrate the life of the late forward following full-time.

Jota spent three seasons with the Old Gold, playing a key role in Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League in 2017/2018 and was a core member of the squad in the following two campaigns.

News of the tragic passing of Jota and his brother Andre Silva last month shocked the footballing world, and the love for Diogo Jota in Wolverhampton was evident in the days and weeks after.

The Portuguese forward is fondly remembered for his time at the club, and tributes for him have been pouring out ever since, with a mural for Jota to be installed at Molineux to memorialise him.

It was an emotional day for all involved, and two Manchester City players showed their respects following the full-time whistle.

Before kick-off, a minute’s silence for Diogo Jota was observed, with a tifo displaying the words ‘We’ll remember you when you walk in fields of gold’ visible in the crowd.

This was the first Premier League match for Wolves following his passing, and it was certainly an emotional day.

Towards the end of the game, and after the match had ended, supporters in the crowd continued the tribute and started to chant Diogo Jota’s name, with two Manchester City players coming over to join them.

Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva came over to Wolves fans to pay their respects, applauding along to chants of Diogo Jota’s name.

It was a classy gesture, creating an emotional scene at Molineux, highlighting the impact that Jota had on those whose lives he affected.

Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias would both have known Jota personally from the Portuguese national team, having only recently won the Nations League alongside him.

While it would have been a tough day for Wolves, it was also tough for the Manchester City duo.

Silva, who played 37 times with Jota on the international stage, became close friends with the forward during their time away with Portugal. Meanwhile, Rúben Dias lined up with him on 39 occasions in the red kit of their nation.

The loss of Diogo Jota will be felt all throughout the football world, and for many years to come. Jota provided Wolves fans with memorable moments, and he had done the same with both Liverpool and his country too.

He was a fan favourite everywhere he went, and his memory will last for a long time.
