The first thing that comes to mind when I read G-League open tryouts is Jonathon Simmons. After going undrafted in 2012, Simmons famously attended the Austin Toros open tryout and made the team. He spent two years with San Antonio’s affiliate before joining the Spurs in 2015’s Summer League where he scored 23 points in the Las Vegas Summer League Championship Game, helping the Spurs to win the title and earning himself the Championship Game MVP.
Two days later, he signed with the Spurs.
All that season, his story was mentioned as just how far opportunity could come knocking and the power of believing in oneself.
On September 13, the Austin Spurs are hosting open tryouts.
For a $200 registration fee, players will have three hours to show their skills to the Austin Spurs in hopes of earning an invite to join this years squad.
