Cowboys shockingly urged to cut young linebacker ahead of 2025 season

The Dallas Cowboys running back situation might finally be getting clearer. And it might not involve Miles Sanders.

The veteran running back got the start against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday and [failed to impress in any way](https://thelandryhat.com/2-winners-and-2-losers-from-cowboys-preseason-loss-to-ravens). On his second carry, he bobbled the ball on a toss and it led to a huge loss. He also failed to convert on a 4th and 1 despite having a clear hole for the first down.

Sanders finished the game with just 15 yards on seven carries (2.1 yards per carry) despite working exclusively with the starting offense. He didn't show any burst, and his lack of power was very noticeable, especially between the tackles. For a player who has had a strong camp, his debut was anything but exciting.

Miles Sanders may not make the Cowboys' 53-man roster

-----------------------------------------------------

It was notable that Javonte Williams did not play again this week, which certainly indicates that his roster spot is safe.

Jaydon Blue (heel) did not play either, but he will make the 53-man roster because of his speed and quickness. Hunter Luepke is also a lock to be on the roster, considering all of the different hats he can wear on gameday, which leaves one roster spot open.

Sanders is still the favorite to win that last roster spot, but that is far from a guarantee. Not only is he competing with Phil Mafah and Deuce Vaughn for a spot on the team, but he is also competing with every other available running back and the ones who might be available in the next few weeks.

At this age, Sanders is too old to be a No. 3 running back, especially if he isn’t going to contribute on special teams.

The Cowboys are hoping that Sanders can regain the form he had in Philadelphia when he was a Pro Bowl running back. But nothing we saw on Saturday night indicates that he is anywhere close to that caliber of player anymore.

It was a night to forget for the Cowboys’ offense, especially Miles Sanders, who looked like just another guy out there at running back.
