Cardinals release speedy former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver

The Arizona Cardinals have released former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Quez Watkins after he suffered an injury, the team announced.

Watkins was hoping to make a roster push, but an undisclosed injury landed the speedy wide receiver on injured reserve, and he was later released from injured reserve with a settlement.

Watkins was the Eagles’ sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Southern Mississippi. Coming out, he ran a blazing 40-yard dash, clocking in at a 4.35 40 time. Yet, over the years in Philadelphia, he toyed with becoming a returner but never put it all together as a wide receiver, struggling with route running and drops.

He spent last training camp with the Steelers but failed to make a roster push, instead spending much of his time on the team’s practice squad.

The former Eagles wide receiver has struggled to find consistent footing in the league since leaving the Birds, yet the same issues that led to his exit there have given him trouble in his pursuit of making a 53-man roster.

Watkins has hopped on some teams and practice squads, and will now look for another spot where he can latch on.
