Ajax and AS Monaco are reportedly the front-runners to sign 27-year-old Mexican international Edson Alvarez, with West Ham United ready to sell him this summer.
According to an update by French journalist Sebastien Vidal, Edson Alvarez has no future at West Ham United. The Hammers have excluded the former Ajax midfielder from their plans for the 2025/26 season. However, the Mexican international has no shortage of suitors pursuing his signature in the summer transfer window.
Ajax and AS Monaco are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window, with the two well-known clubs leading the battle for his signature. Meanwhile, a report by Give Me Sport has suggested that Alvarez will likely leave West Ham United this month, with talks planned to seal his departure.
Edson Alvarez has endured a hit-and-miss spell since joining West Ham United from Ajax in a deal worth €38 million in August 2023. The 27-year-old arrived at the London Stadium with hype and fanfare surrounding him after his exploits during his four-year stint with the Eredivisie giants.
The Mexican international has never been consistent enough to become a regular starter in the middle of the park for the East London outfit. The player has turned out over 50 times thus far for West Ham United while chipping in with two goals and three assists. However, Alvarez’s stock in the market remains high, with Ajax and AS Monaco among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Ajax’s interest in Edson Alvarez is understandable. The Eredivisie giants are scouring the market for a midfielder as Johnny Heitinga looks to reinforce his squad’s midfield unit in the summer transfer window. So, the West Ham United midfielder has emerged as a viable target for the Eredivisie outfit.
As for AS Monaco, Adi Hutter wants to sign a holding midfielder before the summer transfer window closes, compelling the Ligue 1 giants to set their sights on the West Ham midfielder. Sebastien Vidal has suggested that Ajax and AS Roma are the front-runners to sign Alvarez this month.
Meanwhile, with the 27-year-old Mexican international not in West Ham’s plans for the 2025/26 season, a summer departure from the London Stadium is on the cards. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Alvarez.
