The overall team performance seemed to improve as it went on but was still not as smooth and tidy in possession as would be wanted.
This is how they fared as individuals within that structure.
### Bart Verbruggen 6/10
Grabbed a low cross in the second half but had a pleasingly quiet afternoon until being left with no chance at the end.
### Mats Wieffer 7.5/10
That right-back switch last season has turned into more than a stop-gap move and he battled well against the dangerous and powerful Iwobi, who was substituted.
### Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10
King looked lively but overall this was a solid display at the back and he got a touch on a Smith Rowe shot which led to the final corner. His passing can help Albion progress.
### Lewis Dunk 7/10
Went close with a header late on but had a decent game and his pass hit with some pace guided the team forward for the penalty.
### Max De Cuyper 7/10
A decent Prem debut. We saw one glimpse of his overlapping raids in the first half and a nice touch ahead of the penalty. He will have tougher defensive tests but he got under the ball when Wilson headed wide.
### Carlos Baleba 7/10
Despite a disrupted pre-season, he looked like being a dominant figure early in the game and did some great work in the move for the disallowed goal. That on-the-ball influence faded but he was an important presence deep in midfield and will improve with playing time.
### Yasin Ayari 7.5/10
The man for different roles and has an eye for nicking possession. He is clearly a key part of Hurzeler’s midfield plans.
### Yankuba Minteh 6/10
Always looks a potential danger but threatened more than he delivered and blazed a great chance over as a two-goal lead beckoned.
### Matt O’Riley 7/10
Guided home a perfect penalty but was otherwise in and out of the game. Can get into space and play clever passes as we saw ahead of the Mitoma header.
### Kaoru Mitoma 6/10
Headed a good chance over the bar and, like Minteh, did not deliver as much as expected although he certainly did his work.
### Georginio Rutter 7/10
Are Albion actually playing with a false nine? It feels that way as Rutter leads the line. Great work to run at the defence and force the penalty and again ahead of the Minteh chance as he dropped deeper. Those two big moments go a long way towards his mark out of ten.
### SUBS – Danny Welbeck 6/10
Did well ahead of the Gruda chance and it was a shame he did not continue his run in the middle. Was eased off the ball ahead of the equaliser.
### Diego Gomez 6/10
Almost overpowered Leno with a shot and was keen to put himself about.
### Ferdi Kadioglu 6/10
No highlight moments but good to see him back as an option on either flank.
### Brajan Gruda N/A
A shot or cross? Either way, he had a big chance to make it 2-0.
### James Milner N/A
Sent on to help finish the job, which made sense, but was shrugged off by Muniz for the equaliser.
