While his death was more than 40 years ago, Marvin Gaye remains one of the most famous singers of all time, though not in the mind of Philadelphia Eagles announcer Ross Tucker.
During Saturday’s preseason game between the Eagles and the Cleveland Browns, footage of Tucker dancing while bartending for the Shore Birds Fundraiser was shown.
“You know what song I was singing to,” Tucker asked broadcast partner Scott Graham. When Graham replied that he didn’t, Tucker replied that he was dancing to “It Takes Two.”
“You know who sings ‘It Takes Two?'” Tucker asked.
“Well, it’s not Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, is it?” replied Graham.
“I don’t even know who those are,” Tucker said. “Rob Base.”

Tucker then sang part of the song’s refrain, “It takes two to make a thing go right.”
For anyone who hasn’t figured it out, Tucker and Graham were referring to different songs. Tucker was referencing Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s 1988 song while Graham was talking about a 1966 duet from Gaye and Kim Weston. While Gaye and Terrell were frequent collaborators during their all-too-short careers and lives, that song was not one of them.
Misunderstanding the two same-named songs is one thing. But not knowing who Marvin Gaye is? Come on, Ross. Normally, we’d say, “You’re the Man” but “Mercy Mercy Me,” “What’s going on?”
