Baleba alternative: Man United'weighing up'late move for Premier League midfielder

Manchester United are reportedly giving serious consideration to moving for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton before this summer's transfer window closes for business.

The Red Devils are looking to boost their midfield before the end of the market, and they have moved on from Carlos Baleba, who will not be leaving Brighton & Hove Albion in the current window.

Man United still have a long-term interest in Baleba, with a move for the Cameroonian next year possible, but the club have accepted that Brighton are not prepared to let him leave at this stage of proceedings.

Wharton has also been on Man United's radar, and according to talkSPORT, the 20-time English champions are currently weighing up a move for the England international.

The report claims that Palace have already turned down interest from Bayern Munich this summer, while the 21-year-old is also thought to be on Real Madrid's radar, with Los Blancos head coach Xabi Alonso said to be a big admirer.

Man United 'considering Wharton move' before transfer deadline

Wharton arrived at Palace from Blackburn Rovers in February 2024, and he has proven to be an excellent signing for the club, making 45 appearances since his arrival at Selhurst Park.

The midfielder is expected to be in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, and it only appears to be a matter of time before he joins a major club due to his unique skillset.

Palace are thought to value Wharton in the region of £70m, so it would be a major deal for the Englishman, especially at this stage, with the Eagles not having much time to sign a replacement.

The Eagles may also be losing Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze before the end of the summer market, with Liverpool wanting the former and the latter very much a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

Is a late transfer for Wharton realistic?

For obvious reasons, Palace will be reluctant to let Wharton leave, and the fact that Eze is seemingly nearing a move to Tottenham is bad news for Man United, as the Eagles will not want to let another key man leave.

As a result, the Red Devils could be forced to look elsewhere late in the window, with Sporting Lisbon's Morten Hjulmand, Atalanta BC's Ederson and Athletic Bilbao's Mikel Jauregizar also believed to be on the club's radar.
