Chelsea came out with a fair bit of energy and impetus, but all we could show for that were a few early corners. In fairness, we almost scored off one (Marc Cucurella’s flick headed off the line) and had another one where Enzo got blatantly pushed over (no call from either referee), but beyond that, our efforts in attack were rather tame.
Palace weren’t doing much better, but they did make a set piece count … until that ridiculous blast from Eze was ruled out for another blatant push, this time by Marc Guéhi. Except VAR didn’t rule it out for a push, but rather because Guéhi got “too close to the wall” in the process of pushing Caicedo. So I guess pushing is allowed, just don’t to it too close to the wall?
Inconsistent and scary refereeing continued as Reece James got booked for supposedly “persistent infringement” (was his first called foul), then Palace got a couple yellows as well as they continued to grapple and tackle and do all the usual Best League In The World™ things.
After a scoreless first half, Chelsea tried to ratchet up the tempo in the second half, but Palace’s defending remained resolute and compact. Estêvão’s arrival early in the half injected a bit life, but wasn’t quite enough.
Chelsea finally came to life in the six minutes of added-on time, and both Santos and Delap had chances to win it, but it was too little too late.
