Report: West Ham now eyeing move to sign 'outstanding' Bundesliga star after Ramsey snub

West Ham United are reportedly ready to re-ignite their interest in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Aleix Garcia after their dismal 3-0 defeat to Sunderland in their season opener.

Spanish outlet Fichajes.net reports that Graham Potter wants to add more creativity to his midfield and was keen on signing Jacob Ramsey before he joined Newcastle United from Aston Villa. He is prepared to turn to Garcia, whose future is up in the air following Erik ten Hag's arrival at BayArena.

It's thought that former Manchester United manager Ten Hag wants to deploy a different approach than his predecessor, Xabi Alonso, which could have an impact on Garcia. He has four years left on his contract, having only joined the Bundesliga side from Girona last summer.

West Ham reportedly held talks to sign Garcia last summer, but they instead brought Guido Rodriguez to the London Stadium. His Spanish compatriot has failed to impress, and many were shocked to see him start in the defeat to Sunderland on Saturday (August 16).

Rodriguez's future is uncertain, and he could soon follow Carlos Soler in leaving the club. The latter's loan spell expired, and he returned to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer.

Garcia was a regular under Alonso, who called him "outstanding", last season, appearing 42 times across competitions and registering five goals and four assists. He earned a move to the 2023-24 Bundesliga champions after shining in La Liga with Girona, displaying impressive playmaking abilities.

It's the five-cap Spain international's creativity that seems to be alerting Potter to his availability. There's no word on the kind of fee the Hammers would need to fork out, but he joined Leverkusen for £15.2m a year ago.

Potter's midfield is in dire need of refreshing, and they may face a massive setback with Lucas Paqueta mulling a potential exit. The Brazilian is reportedly "considering exploring options to leave" after a difficult past year that saw him cleared of betting accusations, per Fabrizio Romano.

Another midfielder who has been linked with the Irons is Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, who has been prolific for the Italians throughout his career. It could be a case of two arriving to help the East London outfit strengthen in the middle of the park, especially if Paqueta leaves.
