After a frustrating spell at Leeds United, Max Wober would have been hoping for a fresh start after completing a return to the Bundesliga for the 2025/26 season.
Max Wober joined Leeds in the dying days of the Jesse Marsch regime, from Red Bull Salzburg on a four-and-a-half-year deal, but has struggled to make an impact during his time at the club.
Wober angered the Elland Road faithful after declaring his commitment to the club following their relegation from the Premier League, before promptly departing on loan. He later returned and played a fringe role in the squad that won promotion last season under Daniel Farke.
The Austrian defender departed Leeds again ahead of the new season, joining Werder Bremen on a season-long loan deal as he looks to get his stuttering career back on track.
However, Wober now faces another spell on the sidelines, having picked up another injury on the verge of the new season.

Max Wober injured on loan away from Leeds United
According to a statement from Werder Bremen, Wober will now miss the start of the new season after picking up an injury in their final pre-season friendly.
Wober was previously reported to have suffered a knee injury, which did not disrupt his preparations for the new season. However, he limped off with 11 minutes left to play in Bremen’s final friendly and will now miss the start of the season.

The statement reads: “SV Werder Bremen will be without their defender Maximilian Wöber for the coming weeks. The 27-year-old has suffered a thigh muscle injury.
“Wöber was taken off injured in the 79th minute of the DFB-Pokal game at Arminia Bielefeld on Friday night. An MRI scan has now confirmed the damage, which means the Austrian will miss the start of the new Bundesliga season.”

Leeds were right to move on from the Austrian defender
Leeds fans had high hopes for the self-confessed “warrior”, Max Wober, when he joined from Salzburg as Marsch looked to add more steel to the Whites’ porous back line.
However, Wober and his Leeds colleagues were unable to keep their side in the top flight, and Wober’s time with the club turned sour.
He played just nine times in all competitions in Leeds’ promotion season, with Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk and Ethan Ampadu all ahead of him in the pecking order in defence.
Having brought in Jaka Bijol and Gabriel Gudmundsson ahead of their Premier League return, there was no place for Wober in Farke’s squad. His latest injury setback shows that it was the right decision.
