Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has a 'blind spot' with midfielder Mason Mount, says Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, who can't recall a 'proper' Premier League game the England international has performed in.
Against Arsenal, Mount lined up as part of an attacking three for the Red Devils, alongside new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. The trio looked dangerous, particularly in the first half, but it was certainly Mbeumo and Cunha who showed more of a threat in the final third for United.
Benjamin Sesko was brought on in the second half, and you'd imagine he'll be a regular starter once he's up to speed with Premier League football. What this means for Mount remains to be seen, but Luckhurst appears baffled that he is being selected by Amorim.
Samuel Luckhurst: Amorim Has Blind Spot With Mount at Man Utd
Mason Mount
Reacting on X after Mount was substituted during the game against Arsenal, Luckhurst quickly criticised the former Chelsea midfielder. The Manchester Evening News reporter suggested that it's difficult to remember a 'proper Premier League game' where Mount performed for United, claiming that Amorim has a 'blind spot' with the England international.
"Right two come off. One memorable pass aside, Mount's 'best' work came off the ball again. Difficult to recall a proper Premier League game Mount's performed in for #mufc. Amorim has a blind spot with him."
In Man Utd's best XI, it is difficult to see Mount getting regular game time for them this season. He might not have the defensive discipline to play the deeper midfield two, while Sesko, Mbeumo, and Cunha are likely to be the regular attacking trio when the former is up to speed.
Mount was replaced by Sesko in the second half as Amorim attempted to find a way back in the game for his side, but they were unable to get a result as Arsenal held on for a 1-0 victory. Riccardo Calafiori struck in the first half after a mistake from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who is another player who might struggle to keep his place in the starting XI.
United will be looking for their first points of the 2025/2026 campaign next week, when they travel to Fulham. The Red Devils then face Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup during the week, before ending the month of August with a home game against Burnley.
