Manchester United lost 1-0 to Arsenal in their opening game in the new Premier League campaign at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
New season, same old Bayindir
The Turkey international’s struggles at set-pieces were laid bare yet again, not showing strong hands to deal with the corner-kick that led to Arsenal’s goal.
Early signs of improvement from last term
United came out flying from the blocks – controlling possession and creating chances – a stark contrast from what we saw last season.
They had 56 percent of the possession in the first half but an inferior expected goals (0.59) than Arsenal’s (0.80). They also maintained control of the game in the second half, restricting the visitors to just four shots.
According to TNT Sports, they recorded more than 20 shots, the first time they have done that in a single league game against Arsenal since beating them 8-2 in August 2011.
United now have a strong bench
Man United had several potential match-winners on the bench at the start of the game, which included new signing Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo – the club’s joint top-scorer in the league last term.
There would be a lot of tight games, and having a strong bench could help United accrue more points in this campaign.
Casemiro was excellent in midfield
Despite reports that Amorim has told the Brazilian that he was no longer in his plans, he was outstanding in this fixture, helping United control possession.
The veteran midfielder was brilliant off the ball, winning five of the six ground duels he contested and maintaining composure in possession.
Mbeumo and Cunha impress on debut
According to Squawka Live, the duo accounted for five shots on target, more than the entire Arsenal side.
Mbeumo’s pace and directness caused trouble for Arsenal throughout the game. He recorded 0.43 expected goals (xG) – the most of any player.
The away side also could not cope with Cunha’s movement and trickery – highlighted by a mazy run in the second half.
