Xabi Alonso labelled Manchester United icon as 'the symbol of English football'

Xabi Alonso once named a Manchester United legend as the "symbol of English football," snubbing his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard. Despite the bond they shared on the pitch, the Spaniard reserved the comments for one of the Reds' biggest rivals.

Alonso spent five years on Merseyside, signing from Real Sociedad in 2004. He went on to form a great partnership alongside Gerrard, as the pair claimed the Champions League in 2004/05.

But, despite including Gerrard in his "dream" European Cup XI, Alonso didn't believe that the former Three Lions international was the biggest representative of English football. Instead, he bestowed that honour on Sir Alex Ferguson.

What Alonso Said About Ferguson

Ferguson

In December 2012, United were set to face Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 and multiple storylines were in the works. Cristiano Ronaldo was set to return to Old Trafford, and Jose Mourinho was set to reignite his rivalry with Ferguson.

At the time, the Portuguese manager was considered to be the favourite to replace 'Fergie' as the Red Devils' manager once he retired from coaching. That proved to be just months later, although Mourinho would not be selected as the next head coach at Old Trafford.

Speaking to the Sunday People, via the Mirror, Alonso was asked about both managers. While he backed the Madrid boss to get past United, he did go on to state that Ferguson was "an idol" of English football.

"Ferguson is the symbol of English football and he deserves to be an idol because of the work he has done. I believe his players are happy with him and that is excellent for the atmosphere of the club."

There's no question that Ferguson is a legendary figure within the game, with his trophy collection unparalleled in football. The winner of 13 Premier League titles, he was the mastermind behind one of the most dominant dynasties in English football during his 17 years at Old Trafford.

And Alonso's praise for Ferguson might have extended even further had fate played out differently. Before he signed for Liverpool, the United boss stated that he had kept a close eye on the midfield maestro's development at Sociedad, going as far as to say he was not put off by the £20m release clause.

"Alonso is definitely one I'd take," he said, per Sky Sports. "His contract runs until 2007, but we have been told there's a £20 million buy-out clause."

Liverpool, however, managed to sneak into the race, securing Alonso's services in 2004. He would go on to face Ferguson's United on nine occasions, ultimately losing five times and winning just twice.

Considering how highly Alonso was regarded during his time at Anfield, Reds supporters might have been disappointed that he didn't select Gerrard for the honour. The latter consistently expressed his admiration for his former teammate, calling him his favourite midfield partner and stating that the decision to sell him was "disastrous."

But while Gerrard might not have been English football's embodiment, Alonso did rate his former teammate highly. During their time together at Liverpool, he stated that Gerrard was a "spectacular player" and that he could play for any team in the world.

"Gerrard is a spectacular player and he provides charisma for the team with his play, and is so important for the supporters. He plays in midfield but gives so much support to the attack also. He is a powerful player that could triumph at any club.

"Gerrard, in the Spanish league, would give exhibitions of his quality in every match."
