It's been nearly two weeks since Malik Nabers suited up for practice with the New York Giants.
At first, it seemed that Nabers was still dealing with his toe issue, which had been a minor concern throughout the spring and the summer. But it turns out that another setback has entered the picture. On Sunday, ESPN reported that Nabers' 11-day absence is the result of a back issue.
via @AdamSchefter: Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers hasn't practiced in 11 days after dealing with what multiple sources told ESPN was a minor back problem. One source characterized it as "normal camp tightness."
All offseason long, Nabers has been in and out for the Giants. When the team fired up its OTAs back in the spring, he wasn't a part of the action. Giants head coach Brian Daboll noted that the team is just being cautious with Nabers' toe-related concern.
When mandatory minicamp rolled around, the trend continued. Nabers remained off the field.
When receivers and quarterbacks took a trip out West before training camp for private workouts, Nabers was a part of the action. That's when he had a chance to work directly with Russell Wilson for the first time.
Fortunately, Nabers was suited up for the Giants at the beginning of training camp and had an opportunity to get back in the mix with a handful of practices.
At one point, Nabers went down with a shoulder injury. It was nothing more than a scare. After getting a day of rest, Nabers was back in the mix. However, it wouldn't be long before he started missing time again due to his third setback, which was unknown until Sunday.
Earlier this week, Giants head coach Brian Daboll made it clear he wasn't going to get into the specifics of Nabers' absence. He simply stated the wideout was working hard to get back. For now, the timeline for Nabers' return to action is unknown. The Giants have a couple of weeks before they take the field for the season opener.
While Nabers' absence certainly isn't ideal, the young veteran wideout proved he could adjust to different situations and remain elite. Throughout the 2024 NFL season, Nabers has played with multiple quarterbacks and managed to post 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns on 109 catches in 15 games.
