Manchester United were left frustrated after a 0-1 defeat to Arsenal in the opening Premier League clash.
An early goal from Riccardo Calafiori was the difference between the two sides.
United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir should have done better to command his box, but he allowed the Gunners to clinch the match-winner. He received a 2/10 rating in our post-match analysis.
Head coach Ruben Amorim made his feelings clear about the scrappy goal after the game.
He said to Sky Sports: “More or less the same thing that happened at times last season.
“For me, it’s not playing the ball, it’s protecting the guys they’re attacking. I understand that we want goals, but when you’re touching the goalkeeper in that way, I think it’s hard.
“To lose with a goal like this is hard. We need to be stronger in that moment, but we need to do the same thing on the opposite side.
“We have to adapt to the rules, and today, it’s hard to accept because we were the better team.”
United need to be stronger in their box
It was common knowledge that Arsenal were going to heavily rely on set-pieces to score.
They had enough time in pre-season to form new tactics and formations to attack.
Saliba used his body well to prevent Bayindir from coming off his line to make a high claim.
The Turkish international only managed to parry Declan Rice’s corner towards the far post, where Calafiori applied the finishing touch.
Bayindir complained to the referee, but a professional United goalkeeper must be stronger than that.
Amorim is spot on with his comments that losing a game to a scrappy goal is hard, but his goalkeepers must be stronger and more authoritative in the penalty box.
Unfortunately for the Portuguese head coach, both Bayindir and Onana have made similar mistakes and are vulnerable to set pieces.
With the transfer window still open, the Red Devils have a chance to revamp their goalkeeping department and prevent such appalling errors from happening again.
