Eagles Complete Trade Following Preseason Loss vs Browns

Following their Super Bowl victory last season, the Philadelphia Eagles were able to retain most of their roster. However, just ahead of their quest for a second straight title, Howie Roseman has made an addition to the roster.

On Saturday, the Eagles kicked off their preseason schedule at home against the Cleveland Browns. Things did not end up going their way, suffering a 22-13 defeat.

Roughly 24 hours after this loss, news broke of Philly pulling off a trade to further bolster the cast of talent around reigning SB MVP Jalen Hurts.

Eagles work out trade with Texans for wide receiver John Metchie

On Sunday afternoon, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported a trade between the Eagles and Texans. The two sides have worked out an agreement that will send wide receiver John Metchie to the defending champs.

In return for the young wideout, the Eagles and Texans will have a pick swap and Philadelphia is sending Harrison Bryant to Houston.

Matchie, 25, was a second-round pick by the Texans back in 2022. He was unable to carve out a spot for himself in Houston's offense, and now is on the move ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Across two seasons with the Texans, Metchie appeared in 29 games. In that time, he racked up 412 yards and found the end zone one time.

Now with the Eagles, Metchie joined a loaded wide receiver room headlined by the duo of AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith. Moving forward, he'll likely battle it out with Jahan Dotson for the third spot on the depth chart.

For Metchie, this change of scenery will be a bit of a reunion for him. Prior to entering the pros, he spent three seasons in college at Alabama. Among the countless future NFL players he shared the field with during his time there was Smith. When Alabama captured a national championship in 2020, Metchie had the second-highest receiving yards on the team (916), trailing only Smith.

After having great success as teammates in college, Smith and Metchie will attempt to yield similar results in their second stint together. Seeing that the Eagles have one of the premier rosters in the NFL, they are in a good position to potentially add another championship to their respective resumés.

The Eagles are slated to be back in preseason action on Friday, taking on the New York Jets.
