Clemson football’s offseason hit turbulence this weekend after tight end Ian Schieffelin, a former Tigers basketball standout, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Schieffelin, who spent four seasons as a key contributor on Brad Brownell’s basketball teams from 2021-25, joined the football program this spring to use his final year of NCAA eligibility on the gridiron. Now, his late-career transition to football begins with an off-field setback.

Head coach Dabo Swinney addressed the matter through a statement to TigerNet’s David Hood via a team spokesman, saying Clemson will follow its established policies:

“We are aware of Ian Schieffelin’s arrest on suspicion of DUI. Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide, so Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence. We’re obviously very disappointed by the situation, but we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.

Swinney’s message was clear: discipline is coming, but the program is also grateful the situation didn’t lead to more serious consequences.

Schieffelin’s move from hardwood to gridiron had generated buzz in Clemson circles earlier this year. Known for his toughness and rebounding ability during his basketball career, he was expected to bring size and physicality to Swinney’s tight end group. Instead, his football debut will be delayed as the program handles disciplinary action.

For Clemson, the incident comes at a time when Swinney is placing an increased emphasis on leadership and accountability as the Tigers aim to climb back into the College Football Playoff picture.
