Gary Neville names two players he wants Man Utd to sign after 1-0 loss to Arsenal, they can deal with‘extreme pressure’

Manchester United’s defeat to Arsenal came after a weak goal conceded in the first half from a set piece.

A dominant performance from Manchester United counted for nothing after the Red Devils failed to break Arsenal’s defence down.

Riccardo Calafiori had put Arsenal 1-0 up by heading into an empty net after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir had flapped at Declan Rice’s corner.

There is debate over how much Bayindir was impeded, with Roy Keane stating bluntly on Sky Sports that the goalkeeper must be stronger.

Gary Neville wants new goalkeeper

Andre Onana suffered a pre-season injury yet returned to training a week ahead of the Arsenal game and was expected to go back into the starting line-up immediately

Instead, Onana failed to make the bench with Bayindir selected to start and Tom Heaton named as a substitute.

Bayindir’s weakness at set pieces was exposed by Arsenal, and former star Gary Neville says they need to add a top goalkeeper before the transfer deadline.

Neville told Sky Sports: “There’s a glaring issue that Man Utd cannot ignore and it is the fact they need to find a goalkeeper.

“It is really unsettling when you haven’t got a dominant number one, who is dominant in the air, who owns his six-yard box, comes and punches everything and makes a lot of saves to win you points when your defenders make mistakes.”

Neville tips Martinez or Donnarumma

Neville went on to say he would like to see Manchester United sign either Emiliano Martinez or Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Donnarumma is looking for a move to the Premier League after being axed by Paris Saint-Germain.

Neville commented: “The reason I think they would be good goalkeepers for Man Utd is not necessarily because they are the best goalkeepers in Europe, but they are big personalities and characters.

“You’ve seen Donnarumma in a European final save those penalties for Italy. He looked like a giant. He’s played for PSG in huge games under pressure. Martinez has played in the World Cup final and won it for Argentina.

“They have played under extreme pressure and they almost walk out with that arrogance and dominance of a goalkeeper, Man Utd need that.”

Neville added that he felt Manchester United were the ‘better team’ against Arsenal, but ultimately this counts for nothing with the Red Devils falling to a 1-0 loss.
