Fox’s Joe Davis confuses Bills legend Thomas with Yankees’ Munson in broadcast error

It’s preseason for everyone, including the commentators.

FOX broadcaster Joe Davis proved that during the Buffalo Bills’ 38-0 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday night. During the third quarter of the game, Davis and Greg Olsen had Bills GM Brandon Beane on set. The trio discussed Josh Allen, the NFL’s reigning MVP, to set up a video package.

When it began, Davis made a significant error, stating Allen was Buffalo’s first MVP since Thurman Munson won the award over three decades ago.

“Well, we talked about the contract that he got,” Davis said on the broadcast. “Of course, winning the MVP. First one for the Bills in more than three decades back to Thurman Munson.”

The only problem with Davis’ statement? He had the wrong Thurman.

The Thurman that Davis meant to say was Thurman Thomas. The Hall of Fame running back won the award for Buffalo in 1991 after rushing for 1,407 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games while hauling in 62 receptions for 631 yards and five touchdowns. In his career with the Bills, Thomas would be named an All-Pro five times while making five appearances in the Pro Bowl.

Munson, meanwhile, was the catcher for the New York Yankees from 1969 to 1979. During his tenure with the Yankees, Munson did win a Most Valuable Player award. The catcher was named the AL MVP in 1976. He was also named an All-Star seven times in his career with New York.

Despite having the same first name and each having won an MVP award, Davis was far off the mark when he stated Munson was the Bills’ last MVP award winner.
